Mylonites of Mount Antenna, metamorphic rocks of the shear zone, mylonites. The area of Mount Antenna with its crevasses, panoramic views of great effect on various naturalistic beauties, unusual and unexpected views on other geosites of international caliber, could not fail to be recognized as a geosite of international importance. Mount Antenna is located on the ridge which separates the Fiumara Bonamico from the Potis torrent in the San Luca area. The name presumably derives from the larch pines present at the peak which look like antennas.

The real importance, however, lies on the particular geodynamic characteristic which sees in the area of Mount Antenna, the shear zone, that is a crustal cut area, namely the stretch where two crystalline units overlap, i.e. the Aspromonte Unit which 30 millions of years ago “overrode” the Madonna di Polsi Unit. The mylonites are born during this movement, that is from the contact between the two crustal blocks, therefore when the deforming, fast and joint action of high pressure and high temperature transforms the pre-existing rocks furtherly making them particularly foliate. We can consider mylonites a process rather than a type of rock.
