The excursion to the Mundu and Galasia Waterfalls is not only a dip into a fairy-tale world of enchanting and almost unreal beauty but also into truly remote times. It allows us to experience up close and first-hand the history of our Earth and leading us to one of the eight geosites of international importance in the Aspromonte Geopark.
The path makes your heart beat faster already after the first 50 meters by immersing yourself in the lush green vegetation of the Tyrrhenian side oft he Aspromonte which transforms the summer heat into a distant memory and the walk immediately into a delight. After less than half an hour we arrive at the torrent called Jamundu by local people. The same feeds a splendid cascade of about 50 meters height downstream, the famous Mundu Waterfall. The steep path leads down to the base of the waterfall where in addition to the magnificence of the cascade and the green pool, the Woodwardia radicans, a variety of huge prehistoric ferns, relics of the pre-ice age, attributable to at least 60 million years ago, are part of this wonder of nature. After the short ascent we cross the Jamundu torrent and set off to reach the Galasia Waterfalls. There is the possibility of viewing both the Galasia Waterfalls from below as the path winds to reach the smaller, 15 m high cascade and the higher one of about 35 meters, set among ancient rocks, which, if they could talk, would tell us about continents and mountain ranges which don’t exist anymore but we can find of in our Aspromonte some rocks that formed even 300 million years ago. And after the dip in the vegetation and the dip in the history of Earth we don’t miss the dip in the basin of the waterfall with its fresh emerald green waters. (Hiking time: 4 hours, elevation gain: approx. 350 m)
